There&#8217;s always a gray and rough looking picture in our mind, but this is how the past looked — colorful and clean. I was absolutely astonished, but mostly about the bridge. I would have never thought, that even newly built bridges would look like this, even 100 years ago. <p>All photos were taken around 1910 mostly in the Caucasus area.

After looking up some information about the city I saw that Google Street View works there as well now. So here are some interesting places we were really impressed by (click on the Picture to see the place in Google Street View):</p>
<div class="space"></div>
<p><em>Podul Opereta</em></p>
<p><a target="_blank" href="http://showmystreet.com/0qgaah_fjc5f_j1b_1h"><img src="http://the-metropolis.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/podul_opereta.jpg" alt="" title="" width="750" height="350" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-891" /></a></p>
<p>This is a place which reminds us of a doll house — eclecticism at it&#8217;s best. But when the sun goes down and the italian looking terraces appear in a soft orange light, it&#8217;s kind of the place you always dreamed of. <a target="_blank" href="http://the-metropolis.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/4.jpg">HERE</a> is a picture of our last year&#8217;s trip showing that magic moment.</p>
<div class="space"></div>
<p><em>Bulevardul Dacia</em></p>
<p><a target="_blank" href="http://showmystreet.com/0qgn1z_fjio3_j-3y_19"><img src="http://the-metropolis.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/dacia.jpg" alt="" title="" width="750" height="350" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-903" /></a></p>
<p>Bucharest was once (before the rebuilding through Ceaușescu) called the eastern Paris. On Bulevardul Dacia, which is one of the main circle streets around the city center, there is a lot of evidence why Bucharest got this byname.</p>
<div class="space"></div>
<p><em>Bulevardul Naţiunile Unite</em></p>
<p><a target="_blank" href="http://showmystreet.com/0qgapg_fj5cn_jp5_23"><img src="http://the-metropolis.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/palace.jpg" alt="" title="" width="750" height="350" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-904" /></a></p>
<p>— everything is a bit bigger in Bucharest.</p>
<div class="space"></div>
<p><em>Calea Moşilor</em></p>
<p><a target="_blank" href="http://showmystreet.com/0qgj02_fjs7p_j1a_17"><img src="http://the-metropolis.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/mosilor.jpg" alt="" title="" width="750" height="350" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-905" /></a></p>
<p>Calea Moşilor is truly one of the most impressive streets I have ever seen. It&#8217;s tristesse stretches many kilometers and is quite overwhelming. Orientation is just provided by crossing streets, which interrupt the uniformly built houses.</p>
<div class="space"></div>
<p><em>Strada Silvestru</em></p>
<p><a target="_blank" href="http://showmystreet.com/0qgjps_fjq0l_j8m_15"><img src="http://the-metropolis.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/hostel.jpg" alt="" title="" width="750" height="350" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-907" /></a></p>
<p>We liked our romanian home. It might look small and odd, but the staff was friendly and there was always a calm atmosphere. Actually a major problem for the city but quite romantic for us — waking up through the barking of the stray dogs.</p>
<div class="space"></div>
<p><em>Bulevardul Unirii</em></p>
<p><a target="_blank" href="http://showmystreet.com/0qg880_fjc0d_j3r_10"><img src="http://the-metropolis.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/unirii.jpg" alt="" title="" width="750" height="350" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-908" /></a></p>
<p>Piaţa Unirii and Bulevardul Unirii will give you the complete East European feeling. Walk along the former architectural highlight and feel like in a road trip movie. </p>
<div class="space"></div>
<p><em>Splaiul Independenţei aka our favourite place</em></p>
<p><a target="_blank" href="http://showmystreet.com/0qgc2m_fj9vf_jq1_2-1"<img src="http://the-metropolis.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/springtime.jpg" alt="" title="" width="750" height="350" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-909" /></a></p>
<p>Well okay, Spring Time is a chain of fast food restaurants throughout Bucharest. BUT you will get the best chicken sandwiches there and a salad from the huge buffet costs you around 1,50€. Sitting in the shade next to Spring Time on Splaiul Independenţei and having a good lunch was a delight. Have a look <a target="_blank" href="http://the-metropolis.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/5.jpg">HERE</a>.</p>
<div class="space"></div>
<p>Get an even better impression of the city by having a look at our photographic travel report <a href="http://the-metropolis.com/2010/09/berlin-bucharest-istanbul/">HERE</a>.</p>
